With a healthy dose of skepticism, I decided to try out the Athena Pelvic Trainer . I was one step away from a pelvic floor operation and my doctor mentioned this device, in passing almost, when I was in for a consultation to book my operation.
Having read a couple of reviews about the Athena Pelvic and after listening to an interview done by Chris Steele, the resident doctor on This Morning, I took the plunge. However, I honestly had no faith that it would work. I had already decided that after years of trying traditional “kegel exercises” that the claims were a myth. I mean, if the Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer could really work on me, it would be a minor miracle.
My pelvic floor had been ravaged by three natural, long, drawn-out births and the legacy I was left with included bad incontinence. It was so bad that I never went anywhere without a Tena pad and I had had to all but give up my running, which I loved. Running made me flood. Awful-yes, but true. It was so bad that the only time I would run was if my best friend ran a couple of paces behind to hide the inevitable wet patches which happened despite wearing the thickest night-time pads. It was like a horrible “secret” which I had to live with, day in, day out.
I shared another problem with my husband, but we rarely spoke about it. My vagina had become so slack that neither of us could feel much sensation during intercourse. Indeed, the frequency became less and less and although this was partly due to the fact that we had 3 children and I was always tired, undoubtedly part of it was due to the fact that sex just wasn’t the same. To illustrate how bad things were, I would sometimes find that tampons “slipped out” during my period-the saving grace being that I was always wearing my trusty Tenas!
The Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer was a little more expensive than some other devices on the market, but it had one stark difference-It was wireless. This meant that when I used it, it was just like having a tampon in. I would use it twice a day when watching TV or reading. It was easy to use and I simply incorporated it into my daily routine.
Within a couple of weeks, I began to notice subtle differences-not much, but enough to know that something was happening “down there”. After around 3 months, I could get away with wearing a thin panty liner for most everyday activities, saving the thick pads for running only. This all felt like a minor miracle to me.
In just over 6 months, a miracle had indeed occurred! I was free of my constant “dribbling” and I no longer flooded when I ran. I continued wearing a thin panty liner for exercise for some time, but realised a couple of months later that this was my “safety blanket” because it was always dry.
And the sex? Suffice it to say that my vaginal muscles are like my pre-pregnancy days and we’ve both noticed a vast improvement in that area.
Now, before you run out and get hold of the Athena Pelvic, I would give a few words of caution.
Although it undoubtedly worked it’s miracles for me, I followed a rigorous program, almost down to the letter as recommended, for several months. There were times when I felt like giving up as the results were subtle at first. However, when I look back now, I would do it all again, it was one of the best things I ever did and I feel completely different now. Indeed, I still use it now, a couple of times a week as like any muscles, the pelvic muscles can slacken off unless exercised. You need to ask yourself if you are the kind of person who is willing to persevere with using the Athena Pelvic regularly in order to get the best possible results from it.
